In honor of an incredibly boring set of Oscar nominations being announced today, I want to post this classic theme song from this classic bad movie: “Moment By Moment.” This film is a love story starring Lily Tomlin and John Travolta. It was written and directed by Lily’s wife Jane Wagner. It has to be seen to be believed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17QZhHrpWHQ
The movie bombed terribly and it has yet to appear on home video in ANY format, even VHS! I found the soundtrack in the 25 cent bin and had to pick it up, for the cover alone. The theme song appears FIVE times on the soundtrack in various reprise & instrumental versions.
When Frankie Goes To Hollywood broke up, what was Paul Rutherford to do? After all, he was only the back-up singer and resident dancer for the band. Well, what he did was recruit the guys from ABC (Martin Fry/Mark White) to write and produce songs for him, which resulted in the song I’m posting here: “Get Real.” It’s an OK song. It sounds very much like the other music ABC was doing at the time (i.e. their album “Up”). I haven’t heard the entire Paul Rutherford album, as this comes from the 12” single, but I don’t believe it was successful and he never made another solo album.
“Nothing separates the generations more than music. By the time a child is eight or nine, he has developed a passion for his own music that is even stronger than his passions for procrastination and weird clothes.”—Bill Cosby
Here’s one of the greatest one-hit-wonders of the 80’s New Romantic era. Peter Godwin started out in the 70’s as a member of the band Metro, who’s only claim to fame I know of is that David Bowie covered one of their songs (“Criminal World”). When he went solo he released an EP (called “Images of Heaven”) and afterward only one full-length album (which I found in the quarter bin 3 days ago but have yet to give a listen). He then disappeared into nowhere. Luckily he left us this one brilliant song. Later down the line I might post “Torchsongs for the Heroine” which is a song Midge Ure (of Ultravox/Visage fame) produced.
Here’s a band that I don’t really know much about aside from this one song. I remember the music video was played on MTV enough back in the 80’s (or that I watched MTV enough to see it every time they played it!) that I grew to like the song. I recently found the 12” single for the song in a bargain bin and scooped it up. I still think it’s a great song.
Here’s what one might call a one-hit-wonder band. Breathe’s song “Hands to Heaven” was fairly popular back in the day. To me they were a one-album wonder, as I LOVE their debut album “All That Jazz,” which spawned “HTH” in addition to SIX other solid singles (although 3 of those were released as singles in Europe only) including this one here, a slightly remixed version of “Don’t Tell Me Lies.” I still love this band. I hated their second album though. And then they broke up. I should probably find that second album again and give it another try. It was just such a disappointment at the time. They made some cool videos too. I used to have their video album on VHS. Sadly, it went bye-bye to the sell-back pile long ago…
Let’s start off the new year with ABBA! Or at least one of them…
As much as I love ABBA, I know virtually nothing about Agnetha’s solo work. I recently found the 12” single for the song “I Won’t Let You Go.” It’s originally from her solo album “Eyes of a Woman.” The 12” came with a remix that, unfortunately, I cannot upload due to file size restrictions. Nevertheless, here is the b-side which is a non-album track.
